Why am I awake at 3am every night?

Short answer AERÉ looks at the room rather than the clock. Near 3am body temperature is at its lowest and the house is at its quietest, so a fridge cycle or a passing car arrives with nothing to mask it. Steady non-looping sound, amber light at floor level and warm feet remove the trigger. Checking the phone adds one.

Something in the room changes at three, and your sleep is light enough to notice it. Temperature is dropping, the house is at its quietest, and any fluctuation in light or sound arrives into that silence with nothing to mask it.

What do people actually say?

I fall asleep fine, then I'm awake at 3am staring at the ceiling. Every night, like a switch.

What actually changes at 3am?

Body temperature is near its lowest point, and the room has usually finished cooling too. The quietest part of the night is also when a boiler cut-off, a fridge cycle or a passing car becomes an event rather than background. None of these would wake you at 10pm — they wake you now because you are in a lighter sleep stage and there is nothing else happening.

Then comes the second, worse problem: the light. One look at a phone is enough to reset the clock you were trying to hold, and the gap between 3am and the alarm becomes a stretch you have to fill awake.

What should you change tonight?

  1. Hold one steady sound. A loop is worse than nothing, because your brain waits for the seam. Non-looping noise masks the fridge and the street without becoming another thing to notice.
  2. Keep light amber and low. If you must get up, use amber at floor level. Bright overhead light at 3am does considerably more damage than the same light at 8pm.
  3. Protect the last hour of warmth. Cold feet are a common 3am trigger. Warm socks or a heated throw for the first hour of sleep often buys you the whole night.
  4. Do not check the time. Turn the clock away. Knowing it is 3:14 adds a worry that light alone did not.
