Why does every sleep mask leak light at the nose?
Because the nose is the only thing that keeps your face off the surface. A flat piece of fabric has to bend round it, and every bend opens a gap. Shaped cups move the fabric off the nose instead of over it.
What do people actually say?
Every mask slides off my face by 2am or leaves a line across my nose. I have tried four.Amazon review — blackout sleep mask category · 2026-01 · verified purchase · source
Why is the gap structural?
A flat mask is a rectangle trying to wrap a curved relief map. The bridge of the nose is the highest point, so fabric either tents over it — leaving two triangular gaps beside the nose — or presses down, which puts pressure on the eyelids and leaves a line across the face by morning.
The strain lands worst at the strap. Most masks pull horizontally to hold contact, and that horizontal pull drags the mask down the nose through the night, so anything that fitted at midnight leaks by 2am.
What should you look for instead?
- Deep cups, not flat panels. The fabric should leave the eyelashes alone. If you can blink freely and feel nothing, light is also not reaching you through a gap.
- A strap that sits low. Across the back of the head rather than over the ears, angled slightly downward, so it pushes the mask into place instead of dragging it down.
- A nose bridge that bends, not folds. A moulded nose piece follows your own bridge — that is where most leaks originate.

Questions people ask next
Ideally not. Contact with the eyelids is both uncomfortable in REM and the sign that the fabric is bending instead of clearing.
They help some people settle, but weight does nothing for light leaks. Shape handles the leak; weight is a separate question.
Snug enough that you cannot slide it down with one finger. Tighter than that and it will drag the mask off your nose overnight.
